Power Plays
“Power plays” refers both to the maneuvers of those in power to stay in power, and to how we are “played” by those same individuals to maintain their dominance.
Who wields power, how and why? Acknowledgement is key. Who acknowledges whom in a particular situation reveals the power dynamics at play. To withhold recognition is a very powerful tool at the hands of those who want to dominate.
The work in “Power Plays” reflects anger and frustration at being the object of such treatment. The images in the drawings and paintings emerged in my consciousness from situations I have experienced. My technique of free-flow mark making is uniquely suited to represent this sort of intuitive awareness. It represents image-making from the gut.
